sodium carbonate decahydrate, also known as sal soda or washing soda, is a common salt. It is used as an excipient and as an antacid in pharmaceutical formulations. It is also an analytical reagent. It reacts with acids in the presence of water to form carbon dioxide gas and to disintegrate. It is air sensitive and should be stored in airtight containers. Sodium carbonate may react violently with aluminum, phosphorous pentoxide and sulfuric acid.
