This material can be used as a lubricating agent. For reduced friction, you can mix it with ISO VG 32 olive oil. The oil acts as a reserve or lubricant if the primary lubricant has failed. It has high resistance to pressure and heat. This material can not be used for food contact. It has strong affinity with metallic surfaces, in addition to its lubricating abilities. Easy to cleave. These characteristics make it ideal as a dry film oil lubricant. Molybdenum dioxide has a low coefficient to friction. It is however not a suitable lubricant for food-contact applications. The crystal structure of the material is similar to graphite. The molybdenum-disulfide is needed to produce a lubricant. It is a strong, dark-colored compound. Its crystal structure is comprised of weakly bound lamellae.
