Magnesium is a versatile metal that comes in many forms, including flakes, pellets, and liquid. It is used in ice melt products because it has less impact on concrete and vegetation compared to calcium based products. It also contains one-third fewer chlorides, which helps keep waterways clean. In addition to being less harmful to plants and concrete, magnesium is non-corrosive. The ice melting properties of magnesium are due to its ability to absorb moisture, creating heat instantly and quickly dissolving into a brine solution that melts ice at temperatures as low as -13 degrees Fahrenheit.

In a powder form, magnesium can be easily formed into a wide variety of shapes and sizes using a dry process called carbothermal reduction. This method produces a higher purity than electrolytic production and requires less energy (7.5 kWh/kg) because the redox reactions involved do not require high temperatures. It can be cast into rod, ingot, pieces, disc, granules, wire, and compound forms. American Elements manufactures magnesium to several standards when applicable, including Mil Spec; ACS, Reagent and Technical Grade; Food, Agricultural and Pharmaceutical Grade; Optical Grade, USP and EP/BP.

Our granulated magnesium is made using a premium blend of 90% oven-dried, screened sodium chloride and 10% magnesium. It is screened to optimal crystal size and is lightly tinted with a non-staining green dye for easy identification, accuracy and spreadability. It will not burn turf, vehicles or pet paws and is safe for use on driveways, sidewalks and parking lots when applied at recommended rates.
