Produced by direct reactions of hafnium with 900 nitrogen, or reaction of hafnium oxides with ammonia and mixed gases of both nitrogen and hydrogen. It is an integral component of hafnium halides, and an important reactive compound. Hafnium nutride can be melted at a melting point 3310°C.
