What is Calcium Nitride Made Of?
Ca3N2 forms when calcium is heated in the atmosphere with the oxygen CaO. Dehydrated fibrous metallic calcium heated at 450°C with a nitrogen stream purified is used to convert the metallic calcium into calcium Nitride after 3-4hrs.
It can either be dark at 350°C or milky at 350- 1150°C depending on how it was prepared. Or, it could turn golden at 1150°C. The calcium nitride that forms can be easily identified because of its ability to react with water and moisture and create calcium hydroxide or ammonia.
