lithium bullion has become a hot commodity amid the frenzy over lithium-ion batteries, which are set to power next generation electric vehicles. The light, silvery-white metal has never been more popular. Its popularity has sparked a scramble by the world’s largest battery producers and end-users to secure supplies of the key ingredient for their high-powered EV car batteries.

The world’s most important reserves of lithium are located in the Atacama Desert in Chile, Australia, South Africa and Argentina. Mining is typically done at salars, salt flats in the Andes mountains that have been filled with brine over time. Lithium is extracted from these brines by evaporation. The liquid form of the mineral is then processed into lithium carbonate and slurried to make lithium hydroxide, which can be further refined to produce battery-grade lithium metal.

In the past, most lithium production came from hard rock mines but in recent years, more and more of the metal is being produced through chemical processes. It is estimated that only 30% of the world’s lithium is currently produced through hard rock mines.
