Prepared from the reaction of tin metal with dry chlorine gas in a closed container. It is exothermic and should be used in a fume hood or other well ventilated area.

A reagent for nitrations; very useful in organotin chemistry. It is also used to fix certain dyes, and in treating silk to give it weight.

It can be oxidized with a Grignard reagent to produce tetraalkyltin compounds. It is soluble in water, alcohols, benzene, kerosene, methanol, gasoline, chloroform and toluene.
