Cadmium sulfide (or cadmium-sulphide ) is an inorganic compound. It comes in two forms: the form is a powder that is lemony yellow and the form form is an orange red powder. Water soluble, slightly solubilized in acid, slightly solubilized by ammonia. This yellow solid is made from cadmium sulfur. Cadmium sulfide is a yellow solid with two crystal structures. This mineral, leucite and Clinopyroxene, are rare. In nature it is used as an impure substitute in zinc ores that have a similar structure. Sphalerite zinc and wurtzite zinc ores are the most important economic sources. Cadmium is most commonly found in this compound because it is relatively easy to separate. Its bright yellow color allowed it to be used as a dye in yellow paint called “Cadmium Red” during the 18th Century.
Like zinc sulfide, cadmium sulfide has two crystal forms. Greenockite’s Greenockite Mineral has both a hexagonal, stable wurtzite (present in Greenockite) and a cubic, mixed (present at Hawleyite). Cadmium and sulfur are represented by four coordinates on both forms. Also, there is a high-pressure variant with a NaClrock salt structure.

Both polymorphs, as well as the hexagon, are piezoelectric.
CdS Crystal can be used in the gain medium of solid state lasers.

Cadmium sulfide is prepared from precipitated soluble Cadmium(II ) salts with sulfideions. This reaction is useful for qualitative inorganic as well gravimetric analysis.
Cadmium ore in industry is leached into the cadmium Sulfate with phosphoric acid. It’s adjusted to pH=3.5. Precipitated with sodium sulfide.
CdS can be precipitated, washed of precipitates to remove the soluble Cadmium salts, and then calcination (roasting), to turn them to hexagons. Next, powders will be made by grinding. CdSe or CdSe are co-precipitating when cadmium isulfide selende is required. Cadmium selenide, however, will be formed during the step of calcination.

Cadmium yellow can be called cadmium-sulfide. This color is used to paint enamels, glasses, ceramics, and plastics.
A variety of colors can be made with nickel yellow, including translucent plastics. Cadmium yellow can be mixed with zinc sulfide to make polyethylene translucent. Therefore, the mold processing time should not exceed the recommended length. Zinc sulfide may promote the breakdown of polyethylene and cause it to turn green. In order to prevent black copper Sulfide from forming, Cadmium Yellow should never be mixed in with copper pigments. For green you can mix cadmium and blue pigments.
Cadmium-sulfide has a lot of uses, including as a coloring agent, due to its thermal stability, high light and temperature fastness, chemical resistance and high opaqueness.
