Scandium oxide is the principal form of scandium refining used by the mining industries. The scandium in other minerals is trace, though rare are the scandium-rich ores, like Kolbeckite, ScPO42H2O7 and Thorium Mica (Sc,Y)2(Si2O7). Scandium oxide is often produced as a result of the extraction and processing of other elements.

Applications of new electric lighting source materials
SCI3/NAI is formed from pure SC2O3. A third-generation, electric light source material, is manufactured and transformed to a scandium/sodium lamps for illumination.
The applications of laser materials
Gadolinium gallium scanner garnet (GGSG), which can be made using pure SC2O3 99.9% Gadolinium gilium garnet, (GGG), as Gd3SC2Ga3O12. It has the ability to make the third generation of light emitting lasers, which means that the power output of the same laser volume is increased 3.0x. Preparing a single crystal requires 3kg to 5kg of charge, while the amount of SC2O3 99.9% in raw material equals about 1.0 kg.
Application for electronic materials
A pure SC2O3 can be used for an effective oxidizing catalyst in the cathode gun color TV tube. One-millimeter thick Ba, R, Ca oxide layers are sprayed onto the upper part of the color tube cathode. Then, a thin SC2O3 layer of 0.01mm is spread on top. Due to the Mg Sr and Ba react, an oxide layer cathode promotes the reduction. Thus, fluorescence bodies luminescence has a 4x higher current density than the uncoated cathode. The SC2O3 amount for every 21-inch imaging camera is 0.1mg.
